Estoy segura de que, sobre todo cuando estamos de vacaciones en un país caluroso, todos hemos comprado un abanico y lo hemos agitado maníacamente delante de la cara con la esperanza de estar más frescos, mucho más frescos.

Pues bien, me he embarcado en un viaje de descubrimiento del humilde abanico de mano.

Hablan al sexo opuesto y transmiten mensajes. Vaya, no lo sabía y a partir de ahora tendré que vigilar cómo uso mi abanico.

En primer lugar, veamos la historia del abanico. No son originarios de España.

De hecho, se cree que surgió en China a mediados del siglo VII, aunque no fue hasta el siglo XV cuando llegó a Europa, a través de comerciantes portugueses. Sin embargo, hay indicios de que los jesuitas fueron los primeros en introducir este accesorio en Europa.

Fue en el siglo XVII cuando destacaron los primeros artesanos españoles de abanicos. Se contrató a pintores de renombre para que los pintaran a mano para la nobleza. Una muestra de estos abanicos de bella factura aparece en el cuadro de 1635 de Velázquez, la Dama del abanico.

En la época barroca, el abanico se convirtió en un instrumento ideal de comunicación, en un momento en que la libertad de expresión de las mujeres estaba restringida. Los principales gestos y sus respectivos significados conformaban lo que se conocía como "el lenguaje del abanico".

Hoy en día, la mayoría de los artesanos dedicados a la creación de abanicos se encuentran en Aldaya, Valencia, Algunos de estos talleres tienen más de 300 años de antigüedad. Lejos de lo que pueda parecer, la elaboración de un abanico requiere tiempo y son muchas las personas que intervienen en el proceso de fabricación.
